A strategic alliance to strengthen digital resilience in the Sahel
As part of the official visit of the Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, to Nouakchott, Spain and Mauritania have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to promote bilateral cooperation in the area of cybersecurity. The agreement, sealed by Spain's National Cybersecurity Institute (INCIBE) and its Mauritanian counterpart, marks a key milestone in Spanish digital diplomacy.
What does the cybersecurity agreement include?
The MoU establishes a framework for:
- Sharing threat intelligence and detect vulnerabilities in critical infrastructures.
- Develop joint training programs, expert exchanges and educational activities.
- Promote the research and innovation, as well as cyber incident preparedness.
The initiative responds to Spain's objectives in its Foreign Action Strategy, which prioritizes global digital transformation and regional security in the Sahel.
A regional vision with global impact
The signing of the agreement coincides with a key moment for Mauritania, which has recently ratified the Malabo Convention of the African Union, focused on cybersecurity and data protection. This step:
- It reinforces Mauritania's role as a strategic partner in West Africa.
- It allows you to move forward in multilateral cooperation in secure digital environments.
- It opens up new opportunities for technological and economic collaboration.
Spain had already signed similar agreements with countries such as Japan, Argentina and Costa Rica, thus expanding its international digital cooperation network
Key benefits of the Spain-Mauritania agreement
- Better detection of cyber threats through the exchange of technical data.
- Strengthening capacities thanks to specialized training and the exchange of talent.
- Institutional resilience, especially in critical services and digital administration.
- Promotion of international standards in cybersecurity and digital governance.
What can companies learn?
- Collaborating with public bodies is key to anticipate emerging threats.
- Investing in cyber training and talent improves responsiveness.
- Adopt international compliance frameworks (such as the ENS or the GDPR) is a competitive advantage.
- Participate in multilateral initiatives makes it possible to integrate good global practices.
